In the first of our three-episode Leadership + Self-Development series with Rebecca Allen, we discuss the concept of imposter syndrome and overcoming it to build confidence. She reveals how this common psychological phenomena affects even the most accomplished and prolific personalities today.
Using what she calls “magma values”, Rebecca gives examples of how imposter syndrome correlates to the fear of failure and desire for acceptance, particularly our sense of worth. “I’ve worked with women before who went through leadership programmes but still struggle with confidence and have basic issues of esteem because that has never been looked at.”
Such a mentality is thought to be prevalent across all industries, according to research from the International Journal of Behavioral Science. Some 70 per cent of people experience imposter syndrome at one point in their professional lives.
